WHERE TO PLAY GOLF IN MALLORCA
With so many beautiful courses to choose from, sometimes it’s hard to make the right choice. Your time away is precious so we’ve made some recommendations for you:
GOLF SON GUAL
Golf Son Gual, just a ten minute drive east of Palma, is fast moving up the ranks to become one of Europe’s most prized golfing possessions. Despite its youthfulness, having only opened in 2007, Golf Son Gual has earned itself a fantastic reputation.
The 7,250 yard course works its way around 800 olive trees, plenty of bunkers, lakes and even neat rows of vineyards which produce Golf Son Gual’s own wine collection. The course is immaculately maintained by a skilled team of greenkeepers and, although challenging, suited to all levels of golfer.
A favourite with golfing legends and an ever-growing list of celebrities, Golf Son Gual also has a fine clubhouse with first-rate food, beverages and views to round off your game.
GOLF SON MUNTANER
Located in a unique spot between the mountain chain of “Na Burguesa” and the Bay of Palma, surrounded by a beautiful Mediterranean environment, Son Muntaner offers for golf enthusiasts a wide range of strokes, and is in fact a real challenge for every player independent of the handicap. A special design, remarkable greens and an eye for the detail is fascinating for every golf player who visits the Island.
At hole 15 you discover 'Na Capitana', the 1000 year old olive tree, unique on the island, and landmarked by the local Government of Palma de Mallorca.
In 2009 Son Muntaner hosted the “Mallorca Skins Game”, with famous players as José María Olozábal, Justin Rose, Martin Kaymer and Robert Karlsson. Son Muntaner has a driving range, a putting green and a pitching area.
Architect: Kurt Rossknecht
Despite being opened as recently as 2003, this Robert Trent Jones Jr-designed course has a very mature feel to it and has already been recognized by many golfing magazines, journals and guides as one of the finest in Spain.
Golf Alcanada’s biggest ace is its location. Set at the north of the Island, it’s the only course in Mallorca to consistently follow the coastline and has the most incredible views across the Bay of Alcudia including the lighthouse on the island of Alcanada which forms part of the Club’s logo. Looking the other direction and you have the lofty mountains of the Sierra de Tramuntana, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, as a contrasting yet equally imposing backdrop.
Nature is in abundance at Golf Alcanada. Pine, oak and olive trees flank the well-kept fairways whilst many rare and wild species of bird can be spotted throughout the round – particularly if you take an early morning tee time. The par 72 course is challenging, in typical Robert Trent Jones Jr style, with 58 well-placed bunkers and some tricky greens with hidden breaks. Not a course for beginners, his philosophy was “easy bogeys and difficult pars” – something he’s certainly achieved.
Meanwhile, few courses can match Alcanada’s clubhouse for ambience. The centuries-old Mallorcan mansion is the perfect setting for a well-earned post-round drink.
T Golf & Country Club Poniente
The T Golf & Country Club Poniente is home to one of the oldest and most renowned golf courses in Mallorca. Designed by John Harris, the country club boasts seven lakes, numerous bunkers and a plethora of majestic pine trees, making it one of the most beautiful courses in Europe. Located just 12 km away from the city of Palma, the T Golf & Country Club Poniente is characterised by its wide fairways and vast greens, which offer an irresistible challenge to golfers of any level. The course’s 18 holes par 72 and span 6,430 metres across the beautiful rolling hills of Mallorca.
The 8th and 11th holes offer some of the most notable views, providing players with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the surrounding area. Players also benefit from access to the newly renovated clubhouse, which is the perfect place to unwind after the perfect round of golf.
